The State of Women in the Arts

with Sara Vance Waddell, Dr. Carolyn Mazloomi and Holly Schapker

7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 9, 2018 at 1628 Ltd., 11 Garfield Pl., Cincinnati, OH 45202

This event is free, but spaces are limited and registration is required. Click here to register online.

Half of all visual artists working in the United States are women. Yet, women are drastically underrepresented in private and permanent collections. Moreover, the work of African-American women artists is often only shown in marginal spaces, unable to actualize their full effect on the public. What are the reasons behind the disparity? And is there a remedy?

Community advocate, philanthropist and art collector Sara Vance Waddell has amassed one of the largest collections of women’s art in the Midwest. She has generously loaned part of it to 1628 Ltd. The Pieces I Am exhibition features 22 local, national and international pieces by over a dozen artists, all making their debut to the Cincinnati public. Included is Giving Comfort, Finding Pain by Dr. Carolyn Mazloomi. Dr. Mazloomi will be on hand to address the obstacles faced by African-American women artists and, specifically, the ability of their work to address the problems of complicated, interlocking histories. Also highlighted is Holly Schapker, creator of Malala, which is dedicated to honoring the young activist’s commitment to a higher good. Holly will share the personal issues she has faced and the philosophies she relied on to provide motivation and empowerment.

Join us for an evening of inspiration as we celebrate the diversity of the female artistic voice.

In collaboration with 1628 Ltd. The Pieces I Am exhibition is on display at 1628 through June 1, 2018.
